A Savonnerie carpet is made by a hand painting (called a cartoon) which is as large as the rug that is to be woven.
The painting shows the motifs shaded in intricate detail. Notice that unlike oriental rugs, the motifs in a Savonnerie
carpet appear three dimensional. Called depth perspective, it is a unique characteristic of European rugs such as
Aubusson, Savonnerie, and Needlepoint Rugs.

This technique for creating gradual shading and three dimensional looking motifs is so painstaking and intricate, and now
it has been successfully copied by the rug weavers in the east countries. That's why Chinese hand-knotted Savonnerie
rugs and carpets are very popular worldwide owing to exquisite techinique and affordable price.



The very early Savonnerie carpets were made of wool, with small amounts of silk in details and are made in the Ghiordes
knot (also known as the Turkish knot) and have about 90 knots per square inch (90 kpsi). In the beginning French designers
made copies of Persian rugs, but eventually a distinctive French style emerged featuring dense flowers and leafy vines
inspired by patterns found in the friezes of classical Roman buildings as well as pictorial or armorial framed medallions all
enclosed within multiple borders. The background colors were deep blue, black and deep brown. The medallions and
borders could have cream backgrounds. Such kind of French carpet style which continues to the day is still used in various
morden luxurious home decoration.
